Acupuncture
Description:
Acupuncture is a technique in which very thin needles of varying lengths are inserted through the skin to influence and treat the energy systems of the body and to treat a variety of conditions. There are a number of different acupuncture techniques, including some that use sound waves, tiny electrical charges, and some that may or not use actual needles. It is believed that when the body is sick, it is caused by an imbalance in energy or a block in the flow of energy. Acupuncture can restore the balance of energy and remove the blockage. This energy is referred to as Qi.
What does it involve?
In traditional acupuncture (sometimes called acupuncture therapy), needles are inserted at specific locations called acupoints in order to restore balance and healthy energy flow to the body. Needles are inserted into the specific acupoints in varying degrees of depth dependent on the anatomy of the body and prescribed needle location and depth. The amount of time that the needles are retained refers back to the diagnosis and the prescribed treatment as in tonification or sedation of energy (Qi). In our practice we often retain needles for 15 to 20 minutes, with relocation of needles to other areas of the body. We may lightly manipulate the needles and provide other modalities such as moxibustion, cupping and mild electrical stimulation to enhance the effect if treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions

We ask that you abstain from alcohol, caffeine or heavy food ingestion 3 hours prior to your seesio.

Skilled practitioners rarely elecit pain and if sharpness does occur (which is rare) in response to the patients comfort needles will be removed and reinserted and most times with no sharpness or pain. Needles rarely cause any bleeding on entry or removal. Needles are never inserted to a depth that would cause organ or blood vessel penetration.
If a patient is sensitive we modify our treatments which will not require the use of needles. We do find once a patient has been introduces to our techniques they grow to love the sensation and relief that acupuncture therapy provides.
What should I feel?
The appropriate feeling that the practitioner would like to elicit is a dull warmaing sensation called DaQi. At certain times a slight electrical feeling can be felt traveling thru the course of the energy pathway.
Are the needles safe and hygienic?
Modern day acupuncture needles used by licensed practitioners are FDA approved and by law the needles are for one time use only and then disposed of in disposable containers that are shipped to a company for incineration. There is no chance of infection or transmission of germs and other pathogenic organisms as needles are used with one time insertion, disposed of in Osha containers and practitioners have stringent trainings and testing in Clean Needle Technique.
